Last week Moments Lab (ex Newsbridge) announced its membership with the SRT Alliance. We'd like to share a bit more about this exciting new collaboration and what it entails for the future of stream transfer.
First, the SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) Alliance is an entity that oversees the SRT Open Source project, and is the official community of industry leaders and developers collaborating to achieve lower latency internet video transport by continuously improving open-source SRT.
For reference, SRT Open Source Protocol is:
"An open source video transport protocol and technology stack that optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks with secure streams and easy firewall traversal, bringing the best quality live video over the worst networks."
Simply put, it's a way to guarantee stream transfer over the internet between two endpoints, despite network difficulties.
In May 2020, Newsbridge (now Moments Lab) joined the collaborative and rapidly growing community of over 350+ SRT Alliance Members. As the Alliance's mission closely aligns with Moments Lab's objective of delivering future-forward and best-in-class video streaming solutions to clients, the partnership came naturally for both sides.
As a member of the Alliance, the idea is to grow the SRT ecosystem by promoting industry-wide recognition and adoption of SRT as a standard for low-latency internet streaming.
In the world of broadcast media, delivering high quality video across the internet is crucial for successful story production. Whether it's back and forth between production teams, third party entities for clip approval or live streams, the relay of video content is not always streamlined and simple. At Moments Lab, our aim is to make AI-powered story production as simple and reliable as possible. By integrating SRT open source protocol into our existing solution, we are able to ensure that our clients are able to produce deliverables successfully via a more simplified (and less stressful!) experience.
According to Moments Lab CTO Frédéric Petitpont:
"One strength of SRT is actually not relying on the traditional TCP protocol layers 99% percent of other internet usages are built upon. "
This means that during the recent global lockdown, when internet traffic was highly impacted due to increased video usage (Netflix, YouTube…) it led to ISPs throttling users' bandwidths in order to maintain their Quality of Service, with SRT transmissions not impacted. So instead of breaking the internet, many sources including MIT Technology Review, are saying that this activity actually made it stronger than ever.
In exactly the same way, as SRT relies on UDP base layers of the Internet, the Moments Lab platform quality of service was not impacted during the period of confinement.
Petitpont goes on to say:
"Here at Moments Lab, I can now say that there is definitely a post-lockdown state in which SRT is now deeply rooted in our product."
As a SRT solution provider and ambassador, Moments Lab continues to promote this revolutionary technology that is integrated in the company's stream transfer solution.
As a member of the Alliance, the team also looks forward to contributing to the development of the existing technology via open-source SRT continuous improvement.
The SRT Alliance's mission is to provide a solution to the obstacle of low-latency video streaming, in turn revolutionizing modern day streaming. A recent technology, this open-source video transport protocol and tech stack was released at NAB 2017 but already holds promising results in terms of accelerating innovation through collaborative development.
The SRT Alliance will promote the industry-wide recognition and adoption of SRT as a common standard for all low-latency internet streaming.
