ASBU Covers UN Climate Change Conference With Moments Lab

Headquartered in Tunisia, the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) is a professional organization that aims to strengthen ties and promote cooperation among broadcasters in the Arab States for better production and content development. ASBU members include all Arab national radio and television corporations, as well as several private broadcasters, and international news and program exchanges. ASBU’s services include engineering and consulting, the exchange of news, programming and sports, as well as broadcast media training. ASBU also strives to acquire broadcasting rights at preferential rates for a number of international competitions and sports events for the benefit of its members.
ASBU has approximately 44 member organizations and broadcast channels. Among the important roles the organization plays is that of pool media at key events. One such event, in November 2022, was the United Nations Climate Change Conference - COP27 - in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. More than 45,000 people, including over 100 heads of state and governments, gathered at what turned out to be the second-most well-attended climate COP in history to discuss issues critical to addressing climate change.

With regional partner Broadcast Solutions Middle East, Moments Lab (ex Newsbridge) is working on a multifaceted digital transformation of ASBU’s cloud platform. However, ASBU needed an interim solution to automatically record, store and distribute the live feeds from COP27. It wanted to be able to easily translate and categorize footage from the fortnight-long event, identify key people, clip highlights and swiftly send video and audio files to its member radio and TV stations to be packaged into news stories across the Arab world.
This created a need for a transitional cloud media platform with live ingest capabilities, facial recognition, automatic transcription, translation and video editing tools.
Just two weeks before the conference, Moments Lab’s solution for ASBU’s coverage of COP27 was brought to life. It consisted of:

Using a TVU integration with Moments Lab’s Live Asset Manager, simultaneous audio and video streams from COP27 were captured and recorded live into the media hub. Multimodal AI indexing was then applied to automatically detect faces, context and speech-to-text. Auto-generated subtitles were added and media transcripts translated into multiple languages, including Arabic and French.
Themed conference day and session footage was automatically organized into smart ‘Collections’ folders in the media hub. This enabled ASBU users to log in and quickly find, clip and export the content needed for news reports.
Instead of needing to log in to the media hub to schedule recordings, users were able to do this via instant messaging and community platform Slack, through a custom integration. Users received a Slack notification when a recording started and finished, so they could immediately access the media for editing. Once footage was clipped, files could be automatically or manually downloaded from the media hub and shared with ASBU member news desks.
